No — there’s no requirement to exchange rings. I’ve celebrated Nepali weddings where couples chose other meaningful gestures instead, like a necklace, that reflect their own tradition rather than a Western convention.
Are there specific dates we need to avoid for religious reasons?
Often, yes. Some Nepali couples have a period in the calendar they need to avoid for religious reasons, so the wedding date is set around that. Let me know your preferred window early and I’ll work the ceremony around it.
Can our family in Nepal watch the ceremony if they can’t travel?
Yes — several couples I’ve married have had a friend live-stream the ceremony so family back home could watch in real time.
Do both partners need to be present to lodge the NOIM?
Not always — Australian marriage law allows the Notice of Intended Marriage to be lodged with only one partner present in some circumstances. I can talk you through what applies to your situation.
How quickly can we get our marriage certificate after the ceremony?
I register every wedding online the same day, so your official marriage certificate is issued as soon as possible — important if you’re relying on it for a visa application.

Nepalese Wedding
It was a small wedding ceremony, which is what the couple wanted. Exactly one month after we lodged together the NOIM on the BDM registry website, they happily tied the knot.
So the bride and groom chose to have their wedding here in Sydney in the presence of their two witnesses while filming the event to show their family and friends.
The bride arrived with her best friend and got changed into their beautiful colourful Nepalese traditional dresses. It was absolutely my honour to marry another couple from the Nepalese community. Congratulations!

We lodged the NOIM exactly one month prior to the couple’s wedding ceremony. I actually lodged it with just the groom, as the bride was unable to arrive on that day. legally, we can lodge the notice with only one partner of the marriage.
On their wedding day, the bride was wearing the traditional Nepalese wedding day, which is magnificent. So beautiful, colourful and elegant.

A lovely young Nepali couple chose to celebrate their marriage with a personalised registry-style wedding in Sydney. We lodged their Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) together exactly one month before their wedding day.
They arrived with their two witnesses and friends, with the bride looking stunning in her colourful traditional Nepali dress.
Although it was a cold and rainy day, the weather didn’t matter. We held a beautiful indoor ceremony in my spacious living room, creating a warm and intimate setting with plenty of opportunities for wonderful wedding photographs.
